Winona Ryder

2009 Giffoni Film Festival - Day 14
-
Black Book – Out of her experience at the hospital came an appreciation for the marginalized women she met during her stay. And then Ryder cracked the spine of Girl, Interrupted, Susanna Kaysen’s 1993 memoir about life in a psychiatric institution. “What I found so interesting,” says Ryder, “was that if you did something sort of normal-crazy, like taking a bottle of aspirin, you were locked up for years. Now, they won’t hold you if you say you’re schizophrenic and you’re going to kill yourself or someone else. You can thank Reagan for that one.” In 1999, after years spent trying to adapt the book to film, Ryder starred in and produced Girl, Interrupted, for which Angelina Jolie won the Academy Award for best supporting actress.

It was Ryder’s first serious bid for critical acclaim since her Oscar-nominated turn in Nicholas Hytner’s 1996 version of The Crucible. But members of the press were quick to reduce Ryder to a scorned actress overshadowed by a rebellious, brother-kissing man-eater with chaise-lounge lips. “I never had any bad feelings about Angelina,” she says. “And I was hurt that people thought that. Everyone assumed I was really jealous because I thought this would be my vehicle. We said from the very beginning that the actress who played Lisa would probably win an Oscar, because it was the big, great, showy part. But I always related to Susanna.” In a way, Ryder was responsible for jump-starting Jolie’s career. “I fought very hard for her to have that part, and I never really felt like I got the chance to know her.” Did Jolie ever personally thank her? “I feel like it won’t read in print very nicely if I say that wasn’t really her style,” she says. “But she seems to be a completely different person now.”

“Sex! Death! Power! Heathers – The Last Teen Movie”.

These excerpts come from her interview with EMPIRE Magazine…for the upcoming July Issue…

WINONA RYDER

….REVEALS

MORE ‘HEATHERS’

DETAILS….

HEATHERS 2 was, Definitely, the biggest story this past week…Honest. BIG GRIN!

How’s Alphanumeric Going, your new film?

veronica2

Regarding the story below, Seriously, what were they THINKING?

Using a fictional film to illustrate real life brutal, and tragic killings is unjustified…Heathers – a movie – was taken entirely out of context and that was terrible reporting…To single out Heathers and make appear to be a factor behind columbine is outrageous… And to put it on the front page (most people will just glance at the headline, and take it as fact…)

Winona Ryder Devastated After Media’s Columbine Comparison

WENN – Winona Ryder was left devastated in the days following the Columbine High School massacre – after the press used images of her brandishing a gun in cult teen thriller Heathers. The actress made her name as a Hollywood A-lister after starring as a member of a high-school clique, who gets pushed into murdering her fellow students by her bad boy boyfriend – played by Christian Slater.

veronica1
And Ryder recalls that when the 1988 film was released both actors received abuse from angry parents, who were adamant their children could copy the film’s characters.

But the worst backlash came in 1999, after two students at Columbine High School, Colorado fatally shot 12 kids and a teacher before turning their weapons on themselves.

The U.S. press printed snaps of Ryder and Slater in the movie, aiming guns at their fellow students, alongside the story – and the actress was left shocked and dismayed by the warped comparison. She tells Empire magazine, “We got a lot of s**t for it. When Christian (Slater) and I promoted it by speaking at schools and colleges there were so many angry people telling us how irresponsible we were.”I remember when Columbine happened. The day after, the front cover of USA Today had a picture of me and Christian holding guns . It was so hurtful, I was as upset over Columbine as everyone else.”

Winona Ryder…looking wow

6-2-2009-9-45-18-pm6-2-2009-9-44-27-pm6-2-2009-9-45-42-pm6-2-2009-9-44-56-pm

PopSugar – Winona Ryder stars on the cover of the latest issue of Elle magazine, and inside she talks to the mag about her new movie The Private Lives Of Pippa Lee (out July 10) as well as her childhood, acting, beauty and what she describes as her “extra large breakdown”. Here’s a few extracts from her interview:

  • On being bullied:“We only shopped at the Salvation Army, and I would get these three-piece, 1970s little boy suits. I had really short hair, and the third day of seventh grade, these kids basically jumped me in the hall because they thought I was a gay boy, and they roughed me up… I think when that happened, I kind of went into a movie in my head because I couldn’t deal with what was happening. Kids would say, “You’re a witch, you’re creepy, you’re crazy.” I was in the number-one movie in the country and I was still being bullied in school.”
  • On her ‘extra-large breakdown’: “I had just done Dracula and Edward Scissorhands. I had just had my first real break-up, the first heartbreak. And I think it was really ironic because, like, everybody else just thought I had everything in the world, you know, I had no reason to be depressed, everything was sort of at its peak, but inside I was completely lost. I remember feeling, ‘I can’t complain about anything, because I’m so lucky, I’m so lucky…’ After that I realised I needed to take time off more [regularly]. I’m so lucky because I really love doing what I do. There have been times when I’ve wanted to stop, but it wasn’t forever. It was just like I needed to stop and get my life together.”

To read what Winona had to say about Hollywood and her beauty, just read more.

  • On being the leading lady: “For a few years after Beetlejuice I was cast as the outcast, so I thought that was my path. I sort of had it in my head that I was going to be a character actress. Then I did Heathers and it was the first time I had convinced people I could play [a pretty girl]. I went to get my make-up done for the audition. And then after that I got more substantial roles. And it’s funny in your career, you’re a leading lady for a while and then you end up wanting the character roles again.”
  • On her beauty: “I thought it was cooler to be interesting than to be pretty. I must have got that from my parents, who felt strongly about being an individual and being your own person and that looks aren’t everything. I always knew that I wasn’t, you know, beautiful. I never wanted to be beautiful, I never wanted to be a cheerleader.”

Hey Winona Ryder: C’mom…hurry….

Winona Ryder Recently seen on her way to the Metropolitan Museum of Art

WENN – WINONA RYDER will never forget the day she first met director TIM BURTON – because she mistook him for a crewmember. The actress arrived for work on the set of 1990 cult hit Edward Scissorhands and was eager to meet the edgy filmmaker who was helming the oddball project.
And while looking for her new boss, Ryder hit it off with a member of the movie’s art department – who turned out to be Burton himself.
She tells film bible Empire magazine, “When I first met him, I didn’t know he was the director. I thought he was some guy from the art department. We were just talking and eventually, I said, ‘So where’s this Tim Burton guy?’ And he was like, ‘Er, that’s me.’  “I always wonder why I have such a clear memory of that, because I was so young. And I think it’s because it’s so rare to bond with someone so quickly. “I was this alienated kid who got picked on at school. I thought he was just some guy I could talk to about music. He was a kindred spirit straight away.”

Meanwhile, From Gossip Girl – Winona Ryder: Happy Finding Balance

UsMag -  Winona Ryder says she has no ill-will toward Angelina Jolie, who received most of the praise for their 1999 mental hospital drama Girl, Interrupted.Although Ryder was the film’s lead (and executive producer), Jolie’s performance garnered more buzz and landed her a 1999 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. “I knew from the outset that whoever played Lisa was going to get all the attention,” Ryder tells the July issue of Empire magazine. “At one point they asked if I wanted to play Lisa and I said, ‘No, I want to be Susanna.’”"But there was no resentment,” Ryder went on. “When it came out, people almost felt bad for me. But I expected it all along. I was really happy with the film, and really proud of it.” If anything, Ryder said she felt bad for Jolie. “At the time I worked with her, she was battling her looks because she’s so beautiful,” she said. “She wanted very much to be taken seriously and not just judged on her looks. And she conquered that.”To everyone who wants to see Veronica do another Heathers  – gimme some skin…
