During an early August visit to Los Angeles, a bunch of film journos accepted an invitation to preview the first third of “Eagle Eye,” the latest showcase featuring Steven Spielberg wunderkind Shia LeBeouf.

Now, even if some of us don’t understand the young actor’s appeal to the rest of the world, the thriller from director D.J. Caruso (”Disturbia”) looked legit, starting with some tense moments in a war room and shifting quickly to several relentless and separate cell-phone intrusions into the lives of seemingly shiftless young Jerry Shaw (LeBeouf) and adorable single mom Rachel Holloman (Michelle Monaghan).

I, for one, couldn’t wait to watch the rest, even trying to guess how Joan Allen, whose voice I was convinced made all those threatening and demanding directives to the two young adults in peril, figured into the nonstop action that was sure to come.

Well, as I found out in a Tuesday night screening, I was wrong – on all counts. Not only is the great Ms. Allen missing from the entire mix, but the early promise of that first 35 or so minutes quickly dissolved into techno/sci-fi absurdity and, at best, a tenuous political statement. (Actually, it’s a bit reminiscent of the much more solid “War Games.”)

Filmmakers obviously came up with a great premise they couldn’t cash in on, despite solid work from the always likable Monaghan; Billy Bob Thornton, as an FBI agent; and Rosario Dawson, as some sort of Air Force expert/operative.

LeBeouf actually has a dual role since much of the nonsensical resolution involves the death of Shaw’s twin brother. By the way, we figured that out in the first half-hour. See the rest it at your own risk.

From The AP:

Still, veteran Hollywood publicist David Brokaw said this is most certainly a time of crisis management for LaBeouf and his managers.

Shia – No, no, no, no, no!

“The question becomes: Does he want to use this as a wake-up call or is he going to draw this out and really hurt what he’s doing?” said Brokaw. “Given some of the other behavior of other people in the business right now, I think he’s got a bit of a leash.”

The most immediate effect may be the production schedule for the “Transformers” sequel. LeBeouf underwent surgery on his left hand and plans to return to work within a month, his publicist, Melissa Kates, said.

Shooting is continuing this week, but the production team was to meet Tuesday to discuss any necessary adjustments to the schedule.

Shia LaBeouf, Isabel Lucas

From E! Online – Isabel Lucas may have earned herself a slave for life on the Transformers 2 set.

Sources tell E! News that it was Shia LaBeouf’s Australian costar who was riding in the actor’s truck when he had his early morning DUI crash on Sunday.

Authorities said yesterday that neither LaBeouf’s then-unidentified female passenger nor the driver of the car he hit was seriously hurt. All three involved were taken to the hospital, where the women were treated for minor injuries and later released.

Lucas, 23, who lately has been spotted on the arm of Entourage star Adrian Grenier, was already back on the set of the Michael Bay-directed Transformers 2 today, a rep for Paramount Pictures told E! News.

A rep for Lucas couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

Exclusive Video – SHIA LaBEOUF’S Car Overturned After Car Accident in Hollywood at 3am.

by Mark Park July 28, 2008 Shia LaBeouf

The LAPD confirms to “The Insider” that the first call about Shia LaBeouf’s car accident was a 911 call placed from a cell phone.

LaBeouf, 22, was arrested early today on suspicion of drunk driving following a car accident in Hollywood that injured the actor and two others, according to a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s spokesman.

The star of the blockbuster ‘Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’ was the driver of a vehicle involved in a collision at about 2:30 a.m., the spokesman tells “The Insider.”

LaBeouf and a female passenger in his vehicle were injured in the crash, as was a woman driving the other car, the Sheriff’s spokesman said. The driver of the other car was able to drive away from the scene on her own.

The actor was arrested for alleged DUI and released to the hospital and underwent surgery on his hand, the Sheriff’s spokesman said. His female passenger was treated for minor injuries.

A rep for LaBeouf had no comment on the incident.
