The 2009 Angel Ball
PEOPLE -She can do a diva with a dream deferred – now can she portray the mother of a nation?

Jennifer Hudson is set to play Winnie Mandela in Winnie, a movie about former South African president Nelson Mandela’s powerful apartheid-busting but disgraced ex-wife that will begin filming May 30.

“I was compelled and moved when I read the script,” Hudson tells Variety. “Winnie Mandela is a complex and extraordinary woman, and I’m honored to be the actress asked to portray her. This is a powerful part of history that should be told.”
Though Winnie Mandela took the lead against apartheid while her husband languished in prison, she was a controversial figure who was arrested and convicted in 1991 in connection with the murder of a 14-year-old government informant. In 2003, she was found guilty of fraud and theft of money from a funeral fund.

The biopic will be the latest in what may be shaping up to be a Mandela trend: Morgan Freeman will play South Africa’s first black president in Clint Eastwood’s Invictus, opening Dec. 11 and also starring Matt Damon.

People – Jennifer Hudson’s sister, Julia, celebrated turning 31 on Oct. 23 with cake and a small party at home.

The next morning, police say, Julia’s estranged husband William Balfour – booted last February from the house on Chicago’s South Side where they lived with Julia’s mother and 7-year-old son – showed up and spotted a gift he believed came from another man.  That jealousy is the motive that led Balfour, 27, to return to the house after Julia had left for work and shoot her mother Darnell Donerson, 57, Jennifer’s brother Jason, 29, then take Julia’s son, 7-year-old Julian King, and later kill him as well, prosecutors allege.  Jennifer and other Hudson family members were “relieved and happy” after Balfour was charged Dec. 2 with three counts of first-degree murder and one count of home invasion, Chicago Police Deputy Superintendent Steve Patterson has said. “Michelle and I were absolutely heartbroken to learn about this unimaginable tragedy, and we want Jennifer to know that she is in our thoughts and prayer.”

- Barack Obama

(Excerpt) UsMagazine -

I don’t think I’ve ever been happier,” Jennifer Hudson gushed to Us Auguest 26. And why wouldn’t she be? Sex and the City was a 152 billion dollar blockbuster, her self titled debut album was about to hit the stores (where it would debut at number 2 on the billboard charts), she was signed to a lucrative endorsement deal with Avon and she was nine months into a romance with boyfriend David Otunga, 28, that would turn into an engagement in September.

“(Jennifer) was screaming.” Adds a relative who spoke to Jennifer that horrible night: “Jennifer was crying. Her heart was breaking. There’s so much pain.

But just eight weeks later, on Friday, October 24, her world fell apart when she was told her mother Darnell Donerson, and brother, Jason Hudson, had been shot dead in their Chicago home. Three days later, the body of her 7-year old nephew, Julian King, was discovered. “The level of frief is unimaginable,” a source close to the Oscar winner, 27, tells Us.

How she Found Out

UsMagazine - Jennifer was vacationing with her lawyer fiance of one month in Tampa, Florida, when she received the gut wrenching phone call from her sister, Julia (mother to Julian), telling her the awful news that Friday night. “I was hysterical,” Julia told reporters – alongside Julian’s father, Greg King – at a press conference. “(Jennifer) was screaming.” Adds a relative who spoke to Jennifer that horrible night: “Jennifer was crying. Her heart was breaking. There’s so much pain.”

The foundation announcement followed a prayer vigil Wednesday night in Chicago.

“Jennifer sang her first song in this church – she said her first prayer in this church,” her cousin Shari Nichols Witt said of the Pleasant Gift Missionary Baptist Church. Witt also spoke fondly of the actress-singer’s slain nephew, saying 7-year-old Julian King “seemed like he was ahead of his time.”

The Rev. Jesse Jackson, who spoke at the vigil, told PEOPLE that Hudson, 27, and her family “are overwhelmed by the suddenness and the unexpectedness of it all. This family knows triumph, and they also know tragedy.”

As the community grieved the loss of the Dreamgirls star’s relatives, the 27-year-old parolee considered a suspect in their shooting deaths, William Balfour, remained in police custody Thursday.

Balfour – the estranged husband of Hudson’s sister Julia – was being held on an alleged parole violation.

Jennifer Hudson Tragedy: Clashes Supposedly began Over a ‘Stolen Car’

by Mark Park November 2, 2008 Jennifer Hudson

A friend of Jennifer Hudson says he tried to warn the family about William “Flex” Balfour, who is currently considered a “person of interest” in the shooting deaths of Hudson’s mom, Darnell; brother, Jason and 7-year-old nephew, Julian.

Balfour, 27 – who is divorced from Hudson’s sister, Julia, a bus driver – got into a huge fight with Julia, Darnell and Jason about a month ago, a neighbor says in the newest issue of Us Weekly. James Peyton, Hudson’s ex-fiance, was also present.

See Jennifer Hudson’s family album.

“Flex tried to start a fistfight with Jason, and James beat up Flex,” the neighbor adds.

Shortly after, Flex began to threaten the family, saying “he would kill Julia and mess up everyone in the house,” the source tells Us.

The supposed reason of the feud? TMZ.com reports Balfour clashed with the family after Julia claimed he sold one of their cars without permission.

“Flex was crazy, but Jason never took him seriously,” the source tells Us. “Jason always thought he would be safe, that he could protect himself.”

The estranged couple had screaming matches, and had “been having problems, but I never expected anything like this,” neighbor Angela Russell admits to Us.

(Flex’s mother, Michele Davis Balfour, insists her son “had nothing to do with this.”)

Balfour is currently being held on violation of parole stemming from an attempted murder conviction in 1999. The AP reports that he was arrested on June 19 for allegedly having a rock of crack cocaine in his car – but his parole was not revoked then.

Meanwhile, Hudson is determined to hold her family together as she grieves for her mother, brother and nephew – whom she was especially close to.

“Jennifer was like [Julian's] second mom,” Ernest Moore, a neighbor who is related by marriage, tells Us. “Whenever she was around, she spent a lot of time with the boy.”

The Hudson Tragedy: Who Knew What and When?

by Mark Park October 29, 2008 Jennifer Hudson

Although Chicago police have only one known suspect in the slayings of three relatives of actress Jennifer Hudson, some evidence suggests that more than one person may have been involved, law-enforcement sources said today.

See the relationships of the Hudson family and where the events occurred here.

Investigators have focused on suspect William Balfour’s movements on Friday, the day of the murders, as well as his conflicts with his estranged wife, Julia Hudson, and other members of the family. They are trying to determine whether another person drove Balfour to the West Side after the killings at the Hudsons’ South Side home, sources said.

Witnesses said Balfour drove his teal Chrysler to the Hudsons’ block Friday, arriving about 7 a.m. But later the vehicle was discovered by police parked about a mile away outside Robeson High School. Balfour’s girlfriend told police that he was at her West Side home not long after the slayings of Hudson’s mother, Darnell Donerson, and the Oscar-winning actress’ brother, Jason, at their Englewood home, sources said.

Jennifer Hudson’s Nephew Died of Multiple Gunshot Wounds, Autopsy Reveals

by Mark Park October 28, 2008 Jennifer Hudson

Julian King, the 7-year-old nephew of Jennifer Hudson, died of multiple gunshot wounds, Chicago’s Cook County medical examiner’s office said Tuesday.

His death has been ruled a homicide.

Cook County spokesman Sean Howard declined to say where the child suffered wounds or how long he had been dead, citing an ongoing Chicago police investigation, according to The Associated Press.

The announcement follows an autopsy on Julian’s body, which was found in the back of an SUV three days after Hudson’s mother and brother were shot to death.

Chicago’s police chief Jody Weis is confident “we’ll have some evidence that will link us to the killer,” according to the AP.

While no one has been charged in the slayings, police are eyeing William Balfour – Julia’s 27-year-old ex-husband – as a person of interest.

Citing a police source, the Chicago Tribune is reporting that the motive in the killings could be related to ongoing disputes between the suspect and his estranged wife, Julia Hudson, and her family.

One of those disputes was over unpaid car payments, the paper reports.
