On Portia Changing Her Last Name to Degeneres

 PORTIA DE ROSSI is considering changing her name after marrying talk show host ELLEN DeGENERES at the weekend. The couple tied the knot in an intimate ceremony at their Beverly Hills, California home on Saturday (16Aug08) after the state lifted its ban on gay marriage. Arrested Development star de Rossi plans to keep her maiden name for now – but may soon be tempted to take her new bride’s second name. She tells People magazine, “I may do it in the future, but I don’t think I’m going to do it right now.” But talk show host and media magnate DeGeneres insists it would be far too expensive for her to switch to de Rossi: “If I changed my name to hers, then Telepicture (DeGeneres’ productions company) would have to change a lot of signs.”

On Portia and Ellen Having Kids

The couple, wants to enjoy their own time before thinking about children. But they admit it’s a possibility in the future. De Rossi says: “We go back and forth. I don’t know if it’s in our immediate future. It’s something we talk about every few months. We’ll know when the time is right if we’re going to do it.” And DeGeneres jokes that their decision rests solely on looks: “If they would be as pretty as Brad and Angelina’s kids, we might.”

On Equal Rights

The 50-year-old insists the pair’s own marital obstacles could break down barriers for equal rights activists in the future. DeGeneres says: “I feel like it is long overdue. And I think someday people will look back on this – like women not having the right to vote, and segregation and anything else that seems ridiculous – like we all don’t have the same rights.”
