“How do you like being a farmer?” was a question that cropped up more than once during Elizabeth Hurley’s personal appearance in Harrods Food Hall at noon yesterday. It’s true, she did give up London for country life some time ago—and her farm is a working farm—but she’s not exactly slopping the hogs or milking the cows. She has “people” for that. But beef raised chez Hurley has found its way into the jerky that is part of the range of organic snacks she launched yesterday. (The other new products were oat bars and fruit bars.)
The concept is low-cal and low-fat. As a longtime victim of futile fad diets, Hurley spoke with the voice of experience when she acknowledged, “It’s compulsory portion control. I’ve never been able to chop a Jaffa Cake in half and just eat one piece.” But the emphasis is equally on convenience. Subsequent products like soups and ready meals will be “ambient,” i.e., no refrigeration or heating necessary. There was certainly no need for heat in Harrods, where an outlandishly gorgeous Hurley met fans (some had come from as far afield as Belgium and Spain) in a strapless red dress by Carlos Miele. Although on that occasion, the fashion faux pas appeared somewhat deliberate. Thankfully she has toned down her racy taste in underwear since that moment.
According to fashion experts, Miss Hurley should have foreseen what might happen. Static electricity from a thick synthetic carpet combined with new shoes and silky tights can easily cause a flimsy dress to head north. The wise model uses an underskirt or strategic pin. This morning it appeared Liz had learnt her lesson, stepping out in a sensible pair of trousers.

She was flipping the switch to turn the prestigious store’s lighting pink. The Estee Lauder model was in the Big Apple to take part in the launch of Bloomingdale’s month-long breast cancer campaign.
The 122-year-old department store will be illuminated in pink all month as well as hosting numerous fund-raising activities and selling products with proceeds going towards cancer charities. Last night, Hurley joined forces with Bloomingdale’s CEO Michael Gould and cancer survivor and cartoonist Marisa Acocella Marchetto to switch on the pink lights. Hurley is a passionate supporter of breast cancer charities after losing her grandmother to the disease in the 1970s. She has appeared in public service announcements urging women over 40 to have regular mammograms and has released a special edition lipstick with Estee Lauder with proceeds going to the cause.
She said: ‘My grandmother had breast cancer, as have a number of my friends. Now, more than ever, it is important to get the message out. ‘Survival rates are rising, and each year we get closer to a cure. If breast cancer is detected early, it is 98 percent curable.’

She and her husband Arun Nayar own a sprawling country estate in Gloucestershire, England – and Hurley wants TV cameras to capture her ‘normal’ everyday life, to show she’s down to earth.
She says, “People always imagine me with perfect hair. But that’s not who I am. “The first time he saw me in the country, my husband found me in wellies (wellington boots), covered in mud.”
