Patrick Swayze has tried an experimental drug as part of his pancreatic cancer treatment, and he says he’s not giving up despite grim odds. Swayze, who starred in the films Dirty Dancing and Ghost and is filming a new TV show called The Beast, talks about his pancreatic cancer in an exclusive interview with ABC. Swayze tells Barbara Walters that he has stage IV pancreatic cancer that had already spread to his liver when it was diagnosed in March 2008.
“I’m going through hell, and I’ve only seen the beginning of it,” Swayze says in interview excerpts posted by ABC. Swayze, 56, also says that surviving five years is “wishful thinking,” but that living two more years “seems likely, if you’re going to believe the statistics.” And he defines “winning” as “not giving up.” Swayze didn’t have surgery for his pancreatic cancer because the cancer had already spread when it was diagnosed. His treatment included aggressive chemotherapy and an experimental drug called vatalanib.
Here are answers to questions about Swayze’s pancreatic cancer.
What is stage IV pancreatic cancer?
In stage IV pancreatic cancer, the cancer has already spread beyond the pancreas, explains Gagandeep Singh, MD, FACS, director of the Liver and Pancreas Center at the John Wayne Cancer Institute in Santa Monica, Calif.

Patrick Swayze Dying from Cancer

Reuters – Patrick Swayze, the “Dirty Dancing” star who is battling pancreatic cancer, has been hospitalized with pneumonia, a television network executive said on Friday. Swayze skipped a round of interviews scheduled to promote his new crime drama “The Beast” on the A&E cable TV network because of his hospitalization, network president Robert DeBitetto told reporters at the Television Critics Association meetings in Los Angeles. A spokeswoman for Swayze confirmed that the actor had been hospitalized in Los Angeles, but declined to provide further details on his condition.
Swayze was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year and told TV interviewer Barbara Walters this week that he might have only two years to live. “I’d say five years is pretty wishful thinking. Two years seems likely if you’re going to believe statistics. I want to last until they find a cure, which means I’d better get a fire under it,” he told Walters. The American Cancer Society says pancreatic cancer has only a 5 percent, five-year survival rate. The majority of patients die within six months. Swayze is known around the world for his role as the dance instructor in 1987’s coming-of-age movie “Dirty Dancing,” which inspired hit stage shows in London, Australia and Canada. He has starred in numerous other movies, including the 1990 hit romance, “Ghost.”

UsMagazine – Patrick Swayze may be suffering from pancreatic cancer, but he’s still clocking 12-hour days on the set of his new TV drama, The Beast. “I just love to work hard,” the 56-year-old actor tells the New York Times in his first interview since his January diagnosis. “I do find myself, at the end of the day, riding home sort of catching myself with a smile on my face,” he added. “I’m proud of what I’m doing.” The actor has piled on 20 pounds over the past few months by relying on “muscle-building shakes,” he said. Show staffers say he’s only missed a day and a half of work. “I’m still fine to work. I haven’t changed – oh, I have changed, what am I saying?” Swayze admitted. “It’s a battle zone I go though. Chemo, no matter how you cut it, is hell on wheels.”
The actor says he thought he was suffering from a persistent case of indigestion while filming the show’s pilot in December. “Then all of a sudden real symptoms start showing up,” he told the Times. “You see it in the mirror and you go: ‘O.K., better go get checked out.’” Swayze’s reaction after the biopsy and the devastating diagnosis? “Hello, goodbye, welcome to my world.” Swayze has been leaning on his wife of 33 years, Lisa Niemi, for support in fighting the disease. Experts say pancreatic cancer only has a 5 percent five-year survival rate. “How do you nurture a positive attitude when all the statistics say you’re a dead man?” Swayze asked. “You go to work.” The actor says he hasn’t accomplished everything he’s set out to do yet. “There is probably that little bird that flies through your insides and says, ‘I sure would like to make a mark in life,’” he said. “I’ve made a pretty decent mark so far – nothing to scoff at. But it does make you think: Wait a minute. There’s more I want to do. Lots more. Get on with it.”

From Daily News – The veteran actor, who announced in January that he has pancreatic cancer, has been photographed puffing away on the set of his new A&E TV series, “The Beast.” Swayze took a breather from playing an FBI agent who is investigated by an internal affairs team late last week to chat up two members of the crew as he savored his smoke break. Swayze, 56, has been a smoker for years, and has admitted to blazing through up to three packs a day at one point.

The “Dirty Dancing” star came under fire in March after he was caught lighting up after undergoing chemotherapy treatment at Stanford University Medical Center. Despite the smoking, the actor is looking healthier these days. After appearing gaunt at an L.A. Lakers game in May, a fit-again Swayze announced in late July, “I’m a miracle, dude!” Recent studies suggest that smoking a pack or more a day can dramatically increase a smoker’s risk of developing pancreatic cancer. Swayze’s rep had no comment on Monday.
