The 2009 Angel Ball
PEOPLE -She can do a diva with a dream deferred – now can she portray the mother of a nation?

Jennifer Hudson is set to play Winnie Mandela in Winnie, a movie about former South African president Nelson Mandela’s powerful apartheid-busting but disgraced ex-wife that will begin filming May 30.

“I was compelled and moved when I read the script,” Hudson tells Variety. “Winnie Mandela is a complex and extraordinary woman, and I’m honored to be the actress asked to portray her. This is a powerful part of history that should be told.”
Though Winnie Mandela took the lead against apartheid while her husband languished in prison, she was a controversial figure who was arrested and convicted in 1991 in connection with the murder of a 14-year-old government informant. In 2003, she was found guilty of fraud and theft of money from a funeral fund.

The biopic will be the latest in what may be shaping up to be a Mandela trend: Morgan Freeman will play South Africa’s first black president in Clint Eastwood’s Invictus, opening Dec. 11 and also starring Matt Damon.

Superbowl: Jennifer Hudson Performs First Time Since Family Murders

Huffington Post – Hudson, who made her first public appearance since the October slayings in Chicago of her mother, brother and 7-year-old nephew. Her estranged brother-in-law has been charged in the killings. Wearing a flowing white top with black leggings and a military-style dark jacket, the 27-year-old singer/actress looked apprehensive and took a deep breath before launching into the anthem. Hudson, who clocked in at 2 minutes, 13 seconds, looked relieved when she was through. When she returned to her dressing room, she anxiously asked pre-game show producer Rickey Minor “How did I do?” “I told her ‘Touchdown!’” Minor told The Associated Press after the performance. “This was such an important performance, because it’s the first time everyone has seen Jennifer. But she’s in such a great place, with such great spirits and time can heal her wounds. She’s on fire right now and totally grounded.”

Minor, the music director for American Idol , has produced numerous Super Bowl pre-game performances, including Whitney Houston’s 1991 anthem in Tampa that’s considered the benchmark for singers. He said Hudson’s two cell phones lit up “like slot machines” following her performance, and she received a moving text message from Jamie Foxx, her co-star in “Dreamgirls.” “His text said ‘Amazing. It brought tears to my eyes,’” Minor said. “She’s just getting so much love.” Although entertainers can perform live, Minor insisted that Hudson and Faith Hill, who sang “America the Beautiful” before the national anthem, use the tracks the NFL requires them to submit a week before the game. Hudson made her performance personal. “She’s from the church,” Minor said. “So we wanted to give it a gospel feel, use a little organ, rhythm and really give it a feel that matched Jennifer. We wanted her to emote the lyrics and connect with the song.”Hudson’s now expected to resume her active work schedule. Hudson, who won an Oscar for best supporting actress for her role in “Dreamgirls,” is scheduled to perform at next week’s Grammy Awards, and her new video for “If This Isn’t Love” is set to debut the week of Feb. 9.

People – Jennifer Hudson’s sister, Julia, celebrated turning 31 on Oct. 23 with cake and a small party at home.

The next morning, police say, Julia’s estranged husband William Balfour – booted last February from the house on Chicago’s South Side where they lived with Julia’s mother and 7-year-old son – showed up and spotted a gift he believed came from another man.  That jealousy is the motive that led Balfour, 27, to return to the house after Julia had left for work and shoot her mother Darnell Donerson, 57, Jennifer’s brother Jason, 29, then take Julia’s son, 7-year-old Julian King, and later kill him as well, prosecutors allege.  Jennifer and other Hudson family members were “relieved and happy” after Balfour was charged Dec. 2 with three counts of first-degree murder and one count of home invasion, Chicago Police Deputy Superintendent Steve Patterson has said. The foundation announcement followed a prayer vigil Wednesday night in Chicago.

“Jennifer sang her first song in this church – she said her first prayer in this church,” her cousin Shari Nichols Witt said of the Pleasant Gift Missionary Baptist Church. Witt also spoke fondly of the actress-singer’s slain nephew, saying 7-year-old Julian King “seemed like he was ahead of his time.”

The Rev. Jesse Jackson, who spoke at the vigil, told PEOPLE that Hudson, 27, and her family “are overwhelmed by the suddenness and the unexpectedness of it all. This family knows triumph, and they also know tragedy.”

As the community grieved the loss of the Dreamgirls star’s relatives, the 27-year-old parolee considered a suspect in their shooting deaths, William Balfour, remained in police custody Thursday.

Balfour – the estranged husband of Hudson’s sister Julia – was being held on an alleged parole violation.
