Cicely L. Tyson Community School Of Performing & Fine Arts Grand Unveiling
—”Dear Friends:

Over the past several weeks, my team and I have had conversations with many of you to help address your questions about the future of “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” Of course, the one question we couldn’t answer was the one that only Oprah could. And tomorrow, she will do just that.

But before she speaks to her loyal viewers, we wanted to share her decision first with you — our valued partners for more than two decades.

Oprah will announce live on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” that she has decided to end what is arguably one of the most popular, influential and enduring programs in television history. The sun will set on the “Oprah” show as its 25th season draws to a close on September 9, 2011.

We welcome you to share this news this evening with your colleagues and viewers. As we all know, Oprah’s personal comments about this on tomorrow’s live show will mark an historic television moment that we will all be talking about for years to come.

We want to thank you for the partnership and friendship we have shared over the years. Your invaluable support has helped us to create the phenomenon of the “Oprah Show” that we’ve all been so proud to be a part of for the last 24 years. My staff and I will be calling all of you directly tonight and tomorrow. We look forward to speaking with you.

And, if you think the last quarter century has been something, then “don’t touch that dial” as together we plan to make history in the next 20 months … and beyond.

Yours sincerely,

Tim Bennett

President, Harpo, Inc.”

Mariah Carey at PRECIOUS Premiere in Hollywood presented by AFI Fest
… when he was a guest on her show recently. Givens wrote a fiery letter to Winfrey after watching the Tyson special last month. The actress criticized the talk show host for allowing the former boxer to trash talk his ex-wife. Givens appeared on the Oprah show on Friday and fought back angry tears as she mentioned that she sat in disbelief as Oprah’s studio audience chuckled while Tyson admitted he wanted to “sock her.” Oprah then offered Givens a personal apology.

Oprah Winfrey’s production company Harpo and a US insurance firm have reached an amicable settlement over rights to the phrase “aha moment”.

Earlier this year, Harpo asked the Mutual of Omaha to stop using the phrase to promote its products and creating an association with Winfrey.

The talk show host has often used the slogan on her programme to describe “flashes of understanding”.

Representatives for Harpo and Mutual declined to give any further details.

The Omaha-based company responded to Harpo’s request with legal action stating it had obtained preliminary approval of a trademark on “aha moment”.

Mutual also said it had conceived the slogan in early 2008 and encountered no opposition when it made its application to the US patents office. -BBC

AFI FEST 2009 Screening Of Precious: Based On The Novel 'PUSH' By Sapphire

Nearly one year to the day after Discovery Communications’ top dog said Oprah Winfrey would stop syndicating her talk show in September of 2011 and move it to Discovery’s new Oprah Winfrey Network, a blog report saying Oprah will stop syndicating her talk show in September of 2011 and move it to OWN gave The Reporters Who Cover Television the vapors.

“She has not made a decision yet,” Winfrey’s Harpo Productions said Thursday in a stern e-mail to hyperventilating reporters.

“As she has previously stated, she’ll be making an announcement before the end of the year.”

That statement is virtually identical to the scolding Harpo issued within hours of Discovery Communications CEO David Zaslov’s crack about Oprah moving her talkshow to OWN — a comment he made at his company’s first earnings call as a public company back in early November of ‘08.

Back then Harpo said, patronizingly, that “while David Zaslov’s comment are true that Oprah’s current contract to produce ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’ will expire in 2011, she has not made a final decision as to whether she will continue her show in syndication beyond that.”

From which we learned Oprah really does not like men to make her announcements for her.

Don’t expect Oprah to ever marry Stedman Graham. Oprah told a TV news anchor (in Atlanta),  “Had we made the official marriage commitment, we wouldn’t still be together. “The reason the relationship works is that we get to define it on our terms. It would be very different if we were in a ‘traditional’ relationship where I was expected to be a wife and every now and then cook a meal!”

Madonna asks fans to donate to Malawi school she hopes to build

by Mark Park November 17, 2008 Oprah Winfrey

Madonna wants to follow in the footsteps of Oprah.

The singer has released a video on her Web site asking fans for donations to a girls’ school in Malawi.

“There are very few girls in Africa in general who are encouraged or allowed to go to secondary school so after spending a lot of time there I realized that one of the ways I could help was to build a girls’ school,” she said.

She continued: “I would really be grateful if you would get involved and help me in any way that you can with donations, spreading the word, visiting my website, reading about the progress that we’ve made so far…. I would appreciate any help you could give us.”

Madonna has made regular visits to Malawi since adopting her youngest son David, 3.

See other stars that have adopted.

Madonna found David at an orphanage through her Raising Malawi charity and was later granted temporary custody.

The High Court in the capital of Lilongwe approved the adoption this past May after a two-year battle.

Oprah Winfrey opened a school for promising girls from deprived backgrounds in South Africa in January 2007.

“The school is a symbol of leadership, it stands for what is possible for African children,” Winfrey said at the opening.

Oprah Winfrey sued!

by Mark Park October 8, 2008 Oprah Winfrey

PHILADELPHIA – The ex-headmistress of Oprah Winfrey’s school for girls in South Africa sued the TV talk show host for defamation, claiming Winfrey falsely suggested she tried to cover up abuse at the school.

In widely reported remarks last year, Winfrey suggested that Nomvuyo Mzamane, 39, of Philadelphia, knew about alleged abuse by a dorm matron and tried to cover it up, Mzamane says in the lawsuit.

Her lawsuit, filed in Philadelphia Common Pleas Court on Friday, seeks more than $250,000 on five defamation and related counts from Winfrey and her production company.

“The thing that hurt my client the most was when Oprah said, ‘I thought she cared about the girls of South Africa,’” said Mzamane’s lawyer, Timothy McGowan. “It was devastating. She loved those girls.”

A spokeswoman for Winfrey says the company has not seen the suit and plans no immediate comment.

Former dorm matron Tiny Virginia Makopo, 28, is charged with abusing six students at the $40 million school for poor girls that Winfrey built. Makopo allegedly tried to kiss and fondle the victims and is also accused of kicking and hitting some of them.

Makopo has pleaded innocent to 14 charges of indecent assault, assault and criminal injury. Her trial is scheduled to resume later this month in South Africa.

Mzamane, a native of Teyateneneng, Lesotho, came to the United States for college and graduate school. She previously held a leadership post at the Germantown Friends School, a Quaker school in Philadelphia.

Winfrey learned of her background and recruited her in late 2006 to run the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls near Johannesburg. Mzamane worked at the school from about January 2007 through October 2007, when she learned, during a meeting with Winfrey in Chicago, that allegations of sexual and physical abuse had surfaced and she was being put on leave.

Her contract, which paid about $150,000 a year, was not renewed after December. She now is back in Philadelphia, but cannot find work in her field because Winfrey’s remarks about her are easily found on the Internet, McGowan said.
