Convicted Italian con man Raffaello Follieri – who blew his ill-gotten millions on a ritzy lifestyle – says the Brooklyn federal lockup isn’t exactly a 5-star hotel. Rats roam freely, there’s excrement in the shower and Follieri shares a windowless dorm with 120 other shower-deprived men, lawyer Flora Edwards said in a letter Wednesday to a Manhattan federal judge. “He says the stench is intolerable,” Edwards wrote. “Clearly no one should be subjected to these conditions.”

Edwards asked Judge John Koeltl to return Anne Hathaway’s disgraced ex-boyfriend to Manhattan’s Metropolitan Correctional Center before he’s shipped out to start a 4 1/2-year sentence for duping investors out of millions with bogus claims of being a Vatican insider. The 30-year-old playboy pleaded guilty to bankrolling a high-flying lifestyle that included trips with Hathaway to exotic locales on private jets, a dog walker and $37,000-a-month rent for his Fifth Avenue apartment with money stolen from investors.

Among his victims are two Catholic priests who say Follieri swindled them out of $125,000, as well as the Yucaipa Co. headed by Bill Clinton confidante Ron Burkle.
Follieri complained that his medication has been confiscated and that he’s been short of breath. Koeltl asked prosecutors to report back as soon as possible on Follieri’s medical care at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center. Follieri hasn’t been able to eat because the food appears to be spoiled and the toilet and showers are “unspeakably unsanitary,” Edwards said, adding that Follieri has been running a fever. “Although I am not a doctor, I have seen him regularly and he feels warm to the touch and his eyes are glassy,” Edwards said.

Anne Hathaway’s bad-news ex just got the real bad news: He’s going to the casa grande for 4.5 years. Raffaello Follieri will also have three years of supervised probation, and will have to start serving his term immediately. Follieri pled guilty in September to 14 counts of wire fraud, conspiracy, and money laundering. He bilked investors out of millions by falsely claiming to be the Vatican’s chief money man.

His lawyer appealed to the government last week for a three-year sentence in one of the most absurd memos ever written, actually using the cliche, “The road to hell is paved with good intentions.” And now it’s fitted with gray bars, too.

Hollywood.com – Anne Hathaway has a new man in her life — well, not exactly what you’re thinking. The young starlet who recently split from her boyfriend of four years has signed up to star in Warner Bros.’ romantic comedy The Fiance.

We just saw her in Rachel Getting Married, Bride Wars hits theaters in January 2009, and now this? Is Miss Hathaway trying to tell us something thru her films?

Hathaway will play a woman who cancels wedding plans and breaks up with her seemingly perfect fiance so she can try to figure out who she really is, says Variety. Her meddling parents try to patch things up between the pair, making it impossible for her to move on.

It’s not quite art imitating life but there are some similarities to Hathaway’s public break up minus the seemingly perfect boyfriend being convicted of fraud.

Burr Steers is set to direct with production planned to start in March. The original script came from Dyanne Stempel and Jennifer Robinson with a rewrite done by Etan Cohen (yes, Etan … this is not a typo for Ethan Coen).

In other top female casting news, Naomi Watts is in negotiations to star in My Name Is Jody Williams, a Universal drama that Audrey Wells is attached to direct, reports WireTap’s Nancy Tartaglione-Vialatte.

The Hollywood Reporter writes that the screenplay tells the true story of Jody Williams, a strong-willed teacher working for a temporary employment agency who left her life in Washington to pursue an unlikely career in global activism.  Almost a decade and a half later, Williams was honored with the Nobel Peace Prize for leading an international campaign to eradicate land mines. Williams famously called President Bill Clinton a “weenie” for not signing the land mine ban.

OK Magzine – Although Anne Hathaway’s ex-boyfriend, Raffaello Follieri, asked for a reduced sentence in his fraud case, U.S. prosecutors have advised the judge that the Italian businessman doesn’t deserve leniency. Raffaello, who originally agreed to five years and three months in jail after pleading guilty in September to fraud for various business dealings involving the Catholic church, had asked for his sentence to be lessened to three years. Court papers submitted in Manhattan today contend that the Rachel Getting Married star’s ex should serve more than four years in jail for cheating investors, according to the Associated Press. His sentence will be handed down on Thursday.

Anne has remained stoic throughout the controversy surrounding her ex and their high-profile breakup, which fell apart after four years together when Raffaello was arrested last June. “What’s the right thing to do? Do you talk about it? It’s the elephant in the room,” she said recently. “I think it’s better to let everyone know that I’m OK. I’m trying to move on and have a sense of humor about everything.”

BBC – Anne Hathaway and Helena Bonham Carter are to star in Tim Burton’s Disney version of Alice in Wonderland, according to US media.  The Hollywood Reporter says Brokeback Mountain star Hathaway will play the White Queen while Burton’s fiancee Bonham Carter will play the Red Queen. Mia Wasikowska is already confirmed as Alice while Johnny Depp will play the Mad Hatter.  Burton’s take on Lewis Carroll’s novel is slated for release in March 2010.  His version of the classic fantasy tale will use a mixture of live action and animation and will be made in 3D.  Bonham Carter has appeared in a number of Burton’s films including Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, both alongside Depp.

Hathaway’s films include The Devil Wears Prada, Get Smart and Passengers, due out next month.  Eighteen-year-old Australian actress Wasikowska, meanwhile, will star alongside Daniel Craig in war drama Defiance, due out in January.  Burton’s previous projects include Edward Scissorhands, Batman and Big Fish.

NY Daily News – Anne Hathaway wanted to tell David Letterman all about her new film – but she was flustered when all he wanted to  hear about was her jailbird ex-boyfriend. The “Rachel Getting Married” beauty squirmed as Letterman kept peppering her about Raffaello Follieri, her Italian  con-man former beau who faces five years at his sentencing Friday.

“Did you have any hints that there was a problem?” Letterman asked the 25-year-old actress. “I don’t want to go into the specifics,” said Hathaway, who appeared  on the “Late Show” Tuesday night. But she did allow, in a bit of self-depraction, “You do have to give me credit because as far as relationships crashing and burning goes, c’mon, I did pretty great. I mean, scorched that earth!” When Letterman refused to let up, she snapped: “Do you want to know his shoe size, too?” Follieri, a real estate developer, recently pleaded guilty to 14 counts of wire fraud, money laundering charges and conspiracy.

Federal prosecutors say he  misled investors to think he was spending their money to buy Vatican properties at  below market value when all he was doing was funding his  lavish lifestyle. He  is to be sentenced in Manhattan Federal Court Friday. Hathaway insisted  she and Follieri were finished months before he was arrested. “We were over for a bit,” she said. “There were conversations afterwards, but the relationship was absolutely done.” To cleanse herself from the break-up blues, the actress says she  has quit smoking, drinking and eating meat, she revealed. Friends of Hathaway also told the Daily News that she has given up on men for the time being and focusing on herself.

 Anne Hathaway says she’s “trying to move on and have a sense of humor” in the wake of her breakup with ex-boyfriend Raffaello Follieri and his subsequent guilty plea on money laundering and fraud charges.

In an interview with Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts on Thursday, Hathaway steered clear of specifics on Follieri, who is awaiting sentencing on Oct. 10.

The actress, 25, who is promoting her latest film, Rachel Getting Married, said she’s grateful for the support she’s received during troubling times.

“I have a lot of people that love me that have protected me, that were trying to protect me before and are doing even more so now,” Hathaway said. “And when you have that focus on you … and that kind of love, I’m in a position right now, where I’m in a place to grow.”

The interview came a day after her the Devil Wears Prada star was visibly uncomfortable – but a good sport – as she was grilled by David Letterman about Follieri.
