Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie has given birth to twins, the hospital where she was staying in southern France confirmed to Reuters on Sunday (July 13).
“This is true” said Nenval hospital spokeswoman, Nadine Bauer, in Nice when asked if the Jolie birth reports were accurate.
A crowd of photographers and camera crews gathered outside the hospital building on Sunday morning hoping for a glimpse of family and friends arriving to congratulate the parents.
Oscar winner Jolie, 33, had the twins by caesarean section on Saturday evening at the Lenval hospital on the glamorous Promenade des Anglais waterfront drive in Nice. Actor Brad Pitt, the twins’ father, was believed to be at her side.
At nearby Saleya market, shoppers faced the heat and humidity typical of the south as they prepared for Bastille day, some offered congratulations to the Jolie-Pitts.
“Congratulations to you. I must say, I think it’s always a happy moment and it’s good to have kids, really. It’s really fun. I advise everyone to have kids, to experience it. It’s really good,” said Van
Phnu, a visitor from Cambodia.
Another tourist from Spain said she hoped the Hollywood parents could cope managing such a large family,
“Please take care of them because with so many children, I don’t know if they can handle them,” said Ana Romero from Barcelona, Spain.
The girl has been named Vivienne Marcheline and the boy Knox Leon. Both
babies weighed around 2.27 kg (5.0 lbs).
The couple has sold exclusive rights to the first photographs of the twins to an unnamed U.S. magazine for $11 million and said they would give the
money to charity. A Canadian woman visiting in Nice said she was shocked at all the hype surrounding the celebrity couple.
“It’s ridiculous. It’s just two people that just had two kids and they’re making far too much out of it,” said Heather Langfield from Canada. Jolie’s doctor, Michel Sussmann, told Reuters the babies were in “excellent health”. He said the c-section had been planned for a long time but the date was brought forward “for medical reasons”.
“Sleep when the babies sleep. That is definitely my main advice to them,” said Nicole Stechmann from Germany. Marcheline was the name of Jolie’s mother, also an actress, who died of cancer last year. Marcheline Bertrand raised Jolie and her brother, James Haven, after divorcing their father, actor Jon Voight, when Jolie was a toddler.
U.S. representatives for the couple could not immediately be reached for comment, but Sussmann told People magazine that Jolie’s partner Brad Pitt was at her side.
