in Jay Leno

From Chicago Tribune Kansas City Star critic Aaron Barnhart noticed this statement from Jay Leno, which was casually placed in the ninth paragraph of a USA Today profile of the late-night host: “I am definitely done next year — with NBC.”

As Barnhart put it, “Holy smokes, did USA TODAY today bury the lede. Inside a cover story on its Life section about Jay Leno’s garage (three airplane hangars, actually) is this killer quote nine paragraphs in: “I am definitely done next year — with NBC.” This is news to anyone who has been buying NBC’s line that they are in negotiations with Leno about doing something else for the network.”

From Reuters – ABC’s chief programming executive said on Wednesday that his network would welcome Jay Leno if rival U.S. broadcaster NBC fails to find a new job for the comedian when he retires next year as host of “The Tonight Show.” ABC Entertainment President Steve McPherson made the public overture to Leno — becoming the first top U.S. network executive to do so — before a gathering of television critics in Beverly Hills.
