The inner workings of the high-class escort world are revealed in “Secret Diaries of a Call Girl.”Watch “The Insider” on TV tonight for a sexy preview on the ”Secret Diary of a Call Girl,” the new Showtime series based on the real-life diaries of a high-end call girl, Belle de Jour, who admits she enjoys sex and likes the money. But one of the problems she has is that she can’t tell anyone — even her best friend Ben (Iddo Goldberg) — what she does for a living!

“Funny things happened in the business, but because few of my friends knew at that time, I couldn’t have a laugh with them down at the pub like other people would,” the real Belle gives as the reason she started to blog about her life. “The blog gave me an opportunity to share the experiences, and initially, was more about what happens on the way to and from an appointment than during the act itself.”

British actress Billie Piper (”Doctor Who”) plays Belle in the eight-episode series, but the producers are quick to point out that the Belle in the series is fictional, which gave them artistic license to make the character more vulnerable than the real Belle and change a few other details to help her maintain her anonymity.

Belle has chosen to remain anonymous to protect her family, her clients and her agency (Note: while prostution is legal in the U.K., agents are seen as pimps, according to the Showtime press release about the series, and their job is illegal).

“As time has gone on, these reasons have become more important than protecting myself,” Belle says.

One person who does know her true identy is Billie, who met her real-life counterpart. She shares, “She explained exactly how she got into it for reasons I could completely understand. I couldn’t do it myself per se, but I can understand how she found herself in that situation and why she continued in it … I’m sure there are many down sides, but Belle enjoyed what she did and felt very much in control of it. That is a major point, being a prostute was her choice; she wasn’t forced into it.”

On the next episode, a new client takes Belle to a prestigious sex party, but she becomes distracted when she encounters a writer who is a long-time crush of hers. When he asks her to go home with him, she plans to ditch the client, but a call from the hospital where her sister has just been admitted changes her plans.

“Secret Diary of a Call Girl” airs Monday nights at 10: 30 p.m. on Showtime.
