Dear John nearly doubled analysts projections with a whopping $34 million in its opening weekend. More than 80% of its audience was female and more than 21% of its audience was under the age of 21. This also marks Channing Tatum’s second $30 million plus box office openings (GI Joe opened at $54 million) , solidifying him as one of Hollywood’s hottest young stars.

This was the same audience that ploughed High School Musical 3 and the Twilight movies into the top spot.

For the first time in seven straight weeks, the Oscar nominated special effects fest Avatar got bumped into second place with $23 m.5 million. John Travolta’s new action flick flopped taking in a lowly $8.1 million in its debut week. Mel Gibson’s Edge of Darkness fell from No.2 to No.4 with $7 million. Dwayne Johnson’s “Tooth Fairy” comedy finished at No. 5.

When in Rome, The Book of Eli, Crazy Heart, Legion and Sherlock Holmes rounded out the top 10.

Crazy Heart got a huge boost for its stars Best Actor nominated Jeff Bridges and Best Supporting Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal. It earned $3.7 million as it expanded to more theaters this week and finished at No. 8.

In an era of ever-increasing fragmentation of TV audiences, there was no sign of it on Superbowl Sunday. The broadcast racked up the title as  most watched event in television history, outperforming the previous record-holder, the 1983 season finale of M.A.S.H.

The “M-A-S-H” ratings record has proven as durable and meaningful in television history like Babe Ruth’s record of 714 home runs was in baseball topped by Hank Aaron.

“It’s significant for all of the members of the broadcasting community,” said Leslie Moonves, CBS Corp. CEO. “For anyone who wants to write that broadcasting is dead, 106 million people watched this program. You can’t find that anywhere else.”

The post-Superbowl show Undercover Boss also performed better than expectations, drawing 38.6 million viewers to become the third highest rated show after the Superbowl next to Friends and Survivor.

WHAT A JANUARY!

january

No, this January wasn’t the worst January in the history of Hollywood Januarys. After all, it gave us arguably the most critically acclaimed, highest box office grossing film ever in Avatar, that provided history’s highest grossing DVD in the sleeper comedy The Hangover, that solidified Bradley Cooper as one of Hollywood’s hottest stars, that showed the highest rated television program (Vikings Vs. Saints) since the season finale of Seinfeld back in 1992. So no, it wasn’t a terrible January for the Hollywood Industry.

FIRTH IMPRESSIONS

Finally, 15 years later, Colin Firth is ridding himself of a stereotype in hollywood that’s plagued him for the last 15 years. After playing Mr. Darcy in the BBC smash hit miniseries, Pride and Prejudice, it seemed he would  forever be relegated to playing roles similar to the brooding, snobbish handsome and wealthy Englishman he’s become so identified with.

LIFE ON THE A LIST

Brad Pitt is one cool dude. He has massive cinema appeal on the big screen. His films shovel in dough like mad. It started happening to him right from the start. Ok, not right from the start. He did the struggling actor two step by dancing dressed up like a chicken in commercials for a small fast food chain. But in time he made it. Really made it.

JULIA ROBERTS VALENTINE’S DAY

A few years back, Katherine Fugate’s script for a film called Valentine’s Day fell into the hands of well known director Gary Marshall who found himself able to relate with the characters having gone through many Valentine’s Days himself .  “If you’ve been doing Valentine’s Day as long as I have,” he said. “You remember the first time. During the first time in maybe you did a crazy smile or something. ”

LOS ANGELES, CA - JANUARY 31: Singer Miley Cyrus arrives at the 52nd Annual GRAMMY Awards held at Staples Center on January 31, 2010 in Los Angeles, California.

I like all different kinds of movies, but mostly I like darker things … I’ve done a lot and feel like people don’t take me seriously because they haven’t seen the serious side of me.

MILEY CYRUS, on her favorite movies

When I see myself in pictures with make-up on, even to this day, I think it looks weird. My eyes get squintier and smaller.

JESSICA BIEL, on hating wearing makeup

Nobody ever talks about the beauty of the architecture in Pittsburgh, you know? The churches, the steeples

RUSSELL CROWE, on the set of his new film

Sometimes it’s really difficult for me, being far away from home. Los Angeles is where my job is and I have to be close, but I never imagined that my children wouldn’t grow up next door to my brother’s children. Or that my mom and dad wouldn’t constantly be around.

REESE WITHERSPOON, on filming on location

Tiger Woods’ problems come from him being married. The end

JOHN MAYER, on the Tiger Woods Scandal

The good-girl image was something I consciously cultivated after Leon … There was a lot of controversy about the whole Lolita thing. My parents were super-protective about it, but I got a lot of weird letters. It was really upsetting. I didn’t want to be seen as a sex object, so I went the opposite direction. I’m definitely not a prude about sex or nudity, I just don’t want do something that will end up in a screen grab on a porn site.

NATALIE PORTMAN, on the set of Black Swan

I realized how Latina I was, and then also, at the same time, how not Latina enough I was, because I’m born and raised in Los Angeles. I speak Spanish, but I don’t speak perfect Spanish, not like a native speaker. So I’d go into an audition, and they’d ask me if I could sound more Latina

AMERICA FERRERA on auditioning for Latina roles

I told my girlfriend that I was pregnant, early on, and she was like, ‘I’m not having any more kids but if I was going to have one, I would name her Honor,’ … It was just random and it stuck with us. We liked it.
